This 1969 BSA 250 was originally a “Starfire” Street Bike and has had extensive modifications, by industry legends, creating this early English Dirt Bike. Through extensive research we have tried to track modifications and individuals who have worked on and built the “Little BZRRR”
It was purchased from the estate of Mark Loveland of San Diego. Mark was a friend and fellow racer of Don Vesco’s. They raced together for years and in AHRMA Races together. Don & Mark had a “tongue in cheek” race team called Cyclops Racing, as they both only had the use of one eye. Apparently, the last time “Little BZRR” was raced was around 2000 by Mark.
Don helped with the numerous modifications to this bike. In talking with Rick Vesco, Don’s brother, Rick sent me to Rob North. Rob is a famous fabricator that redesigned Triumph and BSA frames making them race winners in the late 60’s and 70’s. I contacted Rob in San Diego, now 85, and he confirmed welding the oil tank, and fabricating parts on this bike for Mark Loveland. The 70’s race scene in San Diego was a small community and the start of the desert sleds and early motocross bikes prior to the Japanese domination of the later 70’s.
We don’t know how much it was raced or enjoyed for many years, but apparently it made a comeback in Don and Mark’s senior years. Last documented races were around 2000 in the AHRMA Antique Races in the 250 class. Both Don and Mark raced that year. Don passed in 2002 with an impressive racing resume. The first motorcyclist to reach 300 mph setting 18 motorcycle and 6 automobile records. Don raced everything two wheels. Dirt Bikes, Road Racing, Land Speed Racing, as well as being a successful motorcycle entrepreneur. Mark Passed around 2017 with the bike last being registered by him in 2015. Paul Z purchased the bike from Mark’s estate at Triumph of San Diego. It sat in his garage for several years before being purchased by Eric Herrmann.
I’m honored to have my hands on this Historic Race Bike adding to the list of impressive motorcyclists that have created, and preserved, this early desert racer. Truly a one-of-a-kind, hand-built dirt bike. This right-side shift bike starts, runs, and is street legal.
